SUP Instructor Tom Logue and His Adventure Circumnavigating Lake Tahoe

Mike's Paddle Intro to SUP Instructor Tom Logue at Cave Rock Put-induring his circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe in 2017.

Tom Logue is one of our Intro to SUP instructors! He is the friendly face many of you see when you decide to learn all of your SUP basics for the very first time. We caught up with him to learn more about how he spends his time on the water and learned a lot about his adventures in that warmer months up at Lake Tahoe!

Tell us about what motivated you to circumnavigate Tahoe. How long did it take you? What was unique about the location? What did you fall in love with and what did you find challenging?

I spend part of my time in Tahoe, and I frequently paddle at both Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe.  Circumnavigating the Lake seemed like a great way to see areas of Lake Tahoe that I had not seen, especially from the water.

I wanted the circumnavigation to be a tour, not a marathon.  I planned a morning-only paddling schedule in early September to minimize afternoon wind and boat traffic impacts.   I set up a six day paddling route (approximately 12 miles per day) using the Tahoe Water Trail site (http://laketahoewatertrail.org/) to help plan my put-in and take-out locations.  My wife generously drove shuttle for me.  The chocolate payments were significant!

Two areas of the lake stood out for me.  The first was the east shore between Sand Harbor and Cave Rock.  Much of this area is inaccessible by road, with little man-made development, and has the stereotypical crystal-clear water you see in Lake Tahoe photos.  The second was Emerald Bay, also a photographer’s mecca.  I’ve been to Emerald Bay multiple times hiking and kayaking, but during my SUP tour I managed to paddle this section early on a mid-week morning and had the bay to myself, under extremely glassy conditions.  Something that doesn’t happen on a weekend in the middle of summer!

What’s your favorite board?

When paddling, I love to try different boards.  Paddling from Mike’s, I usually grab one of the 12’6” race boards.  I’ve been known to “borrow” personal boards that have been stored on Mike’s rack--Thanks Shannon!  Unfortunately, using these fast boards, does not seem to significantly impact my race speed.  I guess there is a fitness and strength factor involved.  Drat, I was hoping expensive new equipment could put me on the podium!  I guess I better get to Mike’s Paddlefit and Race Training more regularly.  When I circumnavigated the lake, I used my personal board, which is a Flatwater Paddle Co. 12’6” race board.

What is one thing that people might not know about you?

One thing that most people don’t know about me is that I am also in the process of circumnavigating Lake Tahoe on foot.  I’m segment hiking the 165 mile Tahoe Rim trail.  I’ve completed about half of the trail.  I took a break this summer.  I’m blaming my hiatus on the big snow year which kept the trails snow covered until late in the season.  At least that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it.  Perhaps my circumnavigation by SUP was to make up for my lack of hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail this summer.

How long have you been paddling and teaching Stand Up Paddleboarding?

I’ve been paddling about 5 years - wow, time flies - and coming to Mike’s since he first opened.  I started instructing at Mike’s about 2 years ago and I’ve enjoyed teaching new paddlers.  I hope I’m able to expose others to the sport so they find their niche (SUP Yoga, racing, fitness, or touring) in the paddle community that Mike is building.  Of course, this is totally self-serving because it translates to More paddling partners!!

Meet Your Instructor: Malia Hill

At Mike's Paddle we have incredible teachers and we wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know a few through this series. In this segment, we meet Malia Hill one of our beloved SUP Yoga instructors and co-founder of SupAsana East Bay. At Mike's Paddle, Malia Hill offers Boga Yoga Flow and Half-Day Sup Yoga retreats and you can read her full bio here. She also co-leads the SUPASANA SUP YOGA CERTIFICATION PROGRAM which is going to be in June 2018.

1) Why do you love SUP Yoga?

I love SUP Yoga because being in nature reminds me of my true nature and how everything is connected. The ebb and flow that is out there is in me too. Also it brings me into the present moment almost immediately. No problem seems big anymore when you're on the water. It also brings awareness, attention and strength to parts of me that I have forgotten about or ignored both mentally and physically.

2) Paint the picture of one experience on the water that you'll never forget?

I used to teach on a lake. We sometimes held sunrise classes and it was so peaceful. Just us and the birds and the mist on the water. We didn't tether or anchor so we would just drift from one side of the lake to the other while practicing. Watching the sun come up on the horizon while doing sun salutations on the water is difficult to put into words. You can feel that you are a part of something larger than yourself and it's part of you too.

3) What do you want all your friends to know about SUP Yoga?

If your mind is busy, and meditation is difficult, take your practice to the water. Instant presence and awareness is there.

4) When you bring students onto the water, what is your main message to them?

The more you allow yourself to relax, the more fun you will have.

5) What's your favorite element that you connect with in your SUP Yoga practice?

The water. It's fluid, flexible and immensely powerful.

6) What's your SUP Yoga spirit animal/creature and why?

Seals. They are curious and playful.

7) What's your favorite SUP yoga pose?

Rocking in malasana.

8) Where would your dream SUP Vacation be?

The Maldives. Honduras. My old home, Lanikai, Hawaii.

9) Anything else you'd like to share with the Mike's Paddle community?

I'm grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you for being family.

At Mike's Paddle we have incredible teachers and we wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know a few through this series. In this segment, we meet Nicolette Tura of The Illuminated Body. At Mike's Paddle, Nicolette offers Half-Day Sup Yoga retreats and Shine Your Light SUP Yoga Specialty Classes (there is still time to join her on Saturday, September 23, by registering here). In October, she will be teaching a Full Moon Flow. Learn more about why she loves SUP Yoga, what her spirit animal is and her favorite SUP Yoga pose.

1) Why do you love SUP Yoga?

I love SUP Yoga because I love nature, water and yoga, so the combination is mind-blowing. It's the best therapy for urban living.

2) Paint the picture of one experience on the water that you'll never forget?

Every class is magical as I get to witness folks surprise themselves with postures that are hard for them on land, but then they nail it on the board; or conversely poses that are super easy on land are comically challenging on the board.

3) What do you want all your friends to know about SUP Yoga?

That everyone can ‘do it.’ If we just give ourselves the time and space it’s a practice in which the rewards are epic for all levels of healing.

4) When you bring students onto the water, what is your main message to them?

Have fun, trust yourself and be present.

5) What's your favorite element that you connect with in your SUP Yoga practice?

Water! I love how it reminds us to go with the flow, there’s nothing to be afraid of and the power water has to open our chronically tight hips is tremendous!

6) What's your SUP Yoga spirit animal/creature and why?

Dolphin. I’m silly, vocal, and I love the water so it just seems fitting lol

7) What's your favorite SUP yoga pose?

Downdog for sure. It gets me every time to see the world upside down with the water, trees, clouds, boats, everything!

8) Where would your dream SUP Vacation be?

Good question, maybe Bahamas, or Jamaica?!

9) Anything else you'd like to share with the Mike's Paddle community?

I’m so grateful to have found Mike’s Paddle, it is such a special place fostering the true sense of ohana. Looking forward to seeing you on the water soon. Big Aloha and Love!

At Mike's Paddle we have incredible teachers and we wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know a few through this series. In this segment, we meet Naushon Kabat-Zinn. Naushon has been studying yoga since she was a teenager and has been teaching in the Bay Area for over 15 years. At Mike's Paddle she offers Half-Day Sup Yoga retreats and Mindful Flow Specialty Classes (there is still time to join her this Sunday by registering here). In October, she will be teaching a Full Moon Flow. Learn more about why she loves SUP Yoga and hear some really great words of advice that she likes to give students who are heading onto the water for the first time.:

1) Why do you love SUP Yoga?

I love SUP Yoga because it gives you a completely different perspective on practice. It makes you go right to the essence. You MUST be present.

2) Paint the picture of one experience on the water that you'll never forget?

I will never forget when we were doing our SUP Yoga Teacher Training, and it was cold and rainy and we had to learn how to do water rescue, and I was soooo resistant to getting into our wetsuits and going out and practicing.  And when Mike taught us and we got in the water and practiced the rescues it was actually so much fun!! I just had to get out of my own silly ideas that it was going to be terrible.  It was some of the most fun I've had!  And now I won't ever forget it.

3) What do you want all your friends to know about SUP Yoga?

That is is truly magical and will bring you back to the most important things in life.

4) When you bring students onto the water, what is your main message to them?

Stay open and be kind to yourself, and let go of any idea that you need to accomplish anything. If you don't want to do something you don't have to.  Even if you just sit or lay on your board and breath you will get something out if it.

5) What's your favorite element that you connect with in your SUP Yoga practice?

Being with the elements of nature.  Connecting within and without.

6) What's your SUP Yoga spirit animal/creature and why?

Haha my SUP Yoga spirit animal is the bat ray, because we see them playing under us as we are practicing and they are so beautiful!

7) What's your favorite SUP yoga pose?

Downward Dog

8) Where would your dream SUP Vacation be?

Greece or Italy

Full Moon SUP Yoga Flow

Join us as we play in the light of the moon.

There is nothing like heading out onto the water to witness the full moon rise. In yoga, we honor the moon's lunar energy. The opposite of the sun, the moon offers us a chance to connect with coolness and calm, which is an amazing counter-balance to our daily go-go energy. The moon also represents our inner self. Set forth with us and howl at the moon. Give yourself permission to unleash your full self in a big way.

Join us on the water for this one-of-a-kind experience. We will head out onto the water prior to sunset for a floating yoga practice. As our practice comes to a close the full moon will rise and will infuse us with its light. Despite the bright glow of the moon, we suggest you bring a headlamp for the journey back to the dock.

Cost: $85 | 2 Hours

Mike's Paddle SUP Yoga Instructor Nicole Harrow.

Mike's Paddle SUP Yoga Instructor Nicole Harrow.

1) Why do you love SUP Yoga?
It leaves me feeling exhilarated and connected with myself and nature.

2) Paint the picture of one experience on the water that you'll never forget?
We were out on the bay one November morning. The water was calm and clear. A low layer of clouds covered the horizon, giving the feeling that we were in open water with no cities nearby. When I started the class a light drizzle began to fall. We continued to practice and slowly the rain began in earnest. Instead of stopping the class there was a feeling of invigoration and connection. As we raised our arms to the sky we laughed and stuck our tongues out to taste the rain! Then this magical thing happened. A seal came to observe the class! Half of his body came out of the water…he stayed like that for some time…watching us play :)

3) What do you want all your friends to know about SUP Yoga?
It is fun!! When you practice SUP yoga you feel like you are LIVING life!!

4) When you bring students onto the water, what is your main message to them?
Open your eyes, allow everything in. Fear may come in…and this is our opportunity to play with it!

5) What's your favorite element that you connect with in your SUP Yoga practice?
That is hard!! I have two. The feeling of the sun resting on my skin, and the sound of the water as it laps against the board.

6) What's your SUP Yoga spirit animal/creature and why?
The Pelican. There is something ancient and magical about these birds. I almost always see them when we practice at Mikes paddle. When they fly by I am reminded of dinosaurs, of the freedom of flight, of the fearlessness when they plunge into the ocean in pursuit of fish! They inspire me to be daring, raw and graceful!!

7) What's your favorite SUP yoga pose?
Standing Splits.

8) Where would your dream SUP Vacation be?
Croatia!!!!!

9) Anything else you'd like to share with the Mike's Paddle community?
I am so honored to be at Mike’s paddle and to share this sacred experience with all of you!!
