December 2023 CABO SUP SURF RECAP
Last month we did our very first Cabo Sup Surf Camp with our staff and instructors in the East Cape. The weather was amazing, water super clear and the surf was nice and mellow!
The surf was 3-4 on most days during the week we were there. Fortunately we were able to meet the last of the South Swell season in the East Cape. We rented a large 4 bedroom house right on the beach of one of the breaks, but we drove to another break nearby everyday because it was more beginner friendly and we can spread out as a larger group.
With 12 SUP surfers, it is hard to get any break and not have surfer politics. But fortuantely we were ahead of the North American snow bird crowd and have the break mostly to ourselves. We took turns at the break with 4-5 SUP surfers at the line up. Everyone was able to get their waves and more!
GENERAL GUIDE
If you have not been to Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo or the East Cape, it's definitely on the top of the list for SUP Surfing. Minimal crowds can be found outside of the major towns of Cabo or San Jose within 1 hour drive of the airport. We can't tell you exactly where we went due to the sensitivity of locals. But check out this Baja Surf Guide book on Amazon, it's great for a read and a general guide. As always, make your own safety judgements as books are generally outdated. Also be sure to check out Surfline for the latest conditions.
PACIFIC SIDE
The Pacific side are best for the North American winters where Alaska swells arrive in Cerritos and the area nearby. The spots along the Pacific are either beach breaks or cobble stone reef breaks. They usually break fast and heavy because of contour, but on mellow days you can find great surfing for SUPs! Check out our intro video to Cerritos.
REEF ALERT!
Almost all of the surf spots east of Cabo San Lucas described below here are reef breaks, so if you're beginner/intermediate, make sure you go on the high tide. Reefs here are sharp; can be dangerous to you and your board. In addition, there are sea urchins that lives on the reef and when you fall on them with bare foot the spines stabs and embed into your skin.
CABO SAN LUCAS/SAN JOSE DEL CABO CORRIDOR
Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo corridor have the easiest surf spots to get to in Baja. Amazingly this area gets surf all year round collecting both summer south swells as well as winter north/northwest swells. Within a hour drive from either city, you can aways find something to surf here any time of the year.
Because of accessibility, there are a lot of surfers on these breaks on the weekends. Weekdays tend to be a lot better because local surfers are working. There are always plenty of foreign surfers and sup surfers.
EAST CAPE
The East Cape is definitely the gem in the area. Between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo Pulmo, there are many breaks usually totally deserted. It does take a little more planning to go to the East Cape because you'll need a high clearance vehicle but the road has been improved over the years and it's paved most of the way.
