INTRO TO SUP (LEVEL 1)
Your very first stand up paddle board class! All beginners are welcome to learn the essentials of SUP. In this intro class, we take it slow: We begin with half an hour of equipment, paddling and safety orientation on land, followed by paddling basics and self-rescue instruction in the beautiful and protected Ballena Bay lagoon. Skills are then put to use with an exciting guided tour out into the open bay (if conditions allow)! No experience necessary.
Ideal Conditions: Less than 10 knots of wind, less than 1 knots of current, no waves
Paddling distance: 1-2 miles
Paddle Strokes: Forward, stop, reverse turns, forward and reverse sweeps. Introduce draw strokes, focus on side draw
Footwork: Changing footwork with turns
Rescue skills: Self rescues with or without PFD, mounting the board from the middle or tail
Environment knowledge: Basic tide high/low changes and weather patterns
Charlyn S wrote: I took the SUP class with a friend this past weekend. I have no experience with paddle boarding and my friend also had no experience. We both had a great time, the instructors were awesome, informative and extremely patient. Especially with both my friend and myself who seemed to lag behind a bit, I was the least coordinated in the group! It was lots of fun, the only thing you need is a positive attitude and sunblock! And you get to see beautiful views of the bay and Pelicans up close! I recommend you try paddling at Mikes Paddle! I'll be back!

Tiffany S from Walnut Creek, CA: My fiancé and I decided last-minute to go for a SUP intro session, since we've been wanting to try it out for awhile. Luckily we live about five minutes away, so we had no issues making it in time for the 10 am start. When we arrived we met Mike and Shannon, our instructor, and both were extremely welcoming and helpful in setting us up. There are changing rooms available for you to change into a wetsuit (which you can rent for free with your lesson) or more comfortable clothing if you'd like. The lesson itself was great -- Shannon was patient, very clear, and clearly skilled at what she does. We got lucky with the weather; it wasn't too windy and the skies were blue -- perfect conditions for our first attempt at SUP. We've been back several times since then, paddling out on our own. It's a fun way to spend a few hours in the sunshine, and a bit of a workout, too.
